Open Streets Chicago tells us…

Open Streets creates safe public space on car-free streets. This free event—held on Sunday, September 16, 2012 on Milwaukee in Wicker Park/Bucktown—promotes community culture, provides a chance for families to get out and have fun, and allows everyone to experience Wicker Park/Bucktown in a new and exciting way.

In addition to the unprecedented opportunity to traverse one of Chicago’s historic streets, Open Streets Wicker Park/Bucktown offers a variety of healthy and fun activities, including a mobile skate park, yoga, and relay races.

A host of Wicker Park/Bucktown businesses are offering discounts at local restaurants, retail locations, entertainment destinations, and other businesses both during and after the event.

Open Streets Wicker Park/Bucktown is an initiative of the Wicker Park Bucktown SSA in association with the Active Transportation Alliance.

Activities

Imagination Playground (ages 3+)
Made of biodegradable, interactive elements—including blocks, crates, carts, sand, and water—this 500-square-foot movable playground encourages creative and physical play.

Kidz Zone (ages 3+)
Bring your children and participate in a series of pedestrian and bicycle safety games and activities. Kids will learn the rules of the road so they can stay safe on bikes or trikes or while playing in any neighborhood.

Dunking Booth (ages 14+)*
Settle the score the old-fashioned way: Send someone splashing into 500 gallons of water. Practice your pitching beforehand, and be sure to invite your friends.

* Minors bring your legal guardians to give us the OK to sink you!

Mobile Skate Park presented by Illinois Center for Broadcasting (beginners all ages; intermediate 15+)
Watch pro and experienced skaters or take a lesson from Character Skateboards and the Chicago Youth Skateboarding Project. Then try skating yourself under the shadow of some of the Loop’s historic buildings, including the Harold Washington Library.

10:45am – 11:00am: Professional Skateboarding Demonstration
* Minors bring your legal guardians to OK your ride on a board.

Yoga (all ages)
CorePower yoga instructors will be on hand to lead you through some poses and breathing exercises. Stand like a tree, reach for the sun and feel the work and school stress melt away. Yoga classes will be held every hour.

Four Square (all ages)
Relearn—or teach your kids—this playground favorite. Players bounce a ball between squares in a series of quick rounds. Eliminated players leave the court, the remaining players move up to the next highest square.

People Zones (all ages)
Grab a spot on one of our ‘pop-up lawns’ in the middle of the street. Read a book, watch the action or hang out with friends without the everyday traffic and noise.
